"The techniques we will be practicing in this lesson are thoracic breath and clavicle breath. In this lesson we will be concentrating the breath primarily within the ribcage, using the expansion and contraction of the thoracic region and the muscles surrounding the chest, shoulders and the neck to isolate the breath within the chest. Chest breathing is supported by muscles located within the chest including those that attach to the ribs and help form the structure of the ribcage. While we may not be aware of these muscles if we are not familiar with the anatomy of the human body, these muscles are extremely important for supporting the breathing cycle as they help to expand the ribcage on the inhalation by pulling the ribs apart from one another and moving them outwards to help create space within the thoracic region for the lungs to expand. On exhalation the same muscles release and relax to allow the ribcage to return to its natural resting position as the lungs reduce in size. The only time the muscles are used on an exhalation is to help release and expel the remaining air out of the lungs at the very bottom of the breath, but this type of breathing is usually through control and caused by a mental modification of the breath."
